Entering a military installation with an RV is not the same as arriving at a commercial campground. Even when you are eligible to use the campground, the installation still controls how visitors enter, which credentials are accepted and which gates can handle an RV.
Campground eligibility and installation access are separate
A person can be eligible for an MWR campground but still need to complete installation-access requirements before reaching a FamCamp behind the gate. Start by confirming both questions: “Can I use the campground?” and “What do I need to enter this installation?”
Find the correct RV gate before departure
Large RVs can be affected by height restrictions, serpentine barriers, narrow inspection lanes or gates that close outside certain hours. The campground’s official directions or MWR office is the best place to confirm which gate should be used with a trailer, fifth wheel or motorhome.
Have documents reachable
- Installation-recognized identification for each adult traveler.
- Campground reservation or confirmation information.
- Vehicle registration and insurance when the installation requires them.
- Any visitor-control documentation you were told to obtain.
- Pet records if the campground or installation specifically requires them.
Expect the possibility of an inspection
Security procedures vary by installation and current force-protection posture. Keep exterior compartments reasonably accessible and avoid arriving with prohibited items. If you travel with firearms or other regulated items, check the installation’s current rules before reaching the gate.
Plan for more time than a civilian RV park arrival
A first visit can involve a visitor control center, a security check and a long drive across the installation. Arriving in daylight reduces the pressure if the preferred gate is closed or you need to reroute.
If GPS disagrees with official directions
Follow the official campground or installation instructions. Consumer navigation may route you to the closest gate even when that gate is unsuitable for recreational vehicles.
