California has a wide range of military camping styles: beach campgrounds, FamCamps, marina RV sites, National Guard parks, dry camping and full-hookup resorts. That makes it useful for route planning, but it also makes campground-by-campground verification essential.

Planning military RV travel in California
- California travel times can be much longer than the map suggests because of traffic, mountain routes and installation access points.
- Beach and coastal military campgrounds may have very different reservation demand than inland desert installations.
- Dry camping appears in several California records, so confirm the exact site type you are reserving.
- Large installations can have multiple gates; verify the recommended RV entrance before arrival.
Southern California has the densest cluster
San Diego County, Camp Pendleton, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Barstow, Twentynine Palms and El Centro create a large southern cluster. Travelers continuing north can then compare Ventura County, Vandenberg, Monterey, the Central Valley and Northern California options.
Verify before departure
Rates, reservation windows, installation access, gate hours and campsite availability can change faster than a static guide. Open the campground page, then use the official military or MWR link before making the location a required stop.
